Should you include personal hobbies on your resume?
YES, if they reflect on you positively!
Experience can include your hobbies. It doesn’t have to be formal, in-office, or even paid work.
1. This shares a well-rounded version of yourself. You don’t work 24 hours a day. Employers are encouraging you to bring your whole self to work.
2. Discussing your hobby may spark a fun conversation with the recruiter or interviewer especially if they share the same hobby.
3. Your hobby can showcase your skills and experience that could help your desired career path.
In interviews, I still talk about the volunteer web dev project I managed for my daughter’s school. I gained a lot of tech and project management skills with work that delivered high impact for our school and families.
I’ve also taken on more leadership roles over the years with tennis. I’m the co-captain of my USTA team. There are a lot of transferable skills like communication and shows my leadership initiative.
Even though I’m not going to see the US Open today, I still enjoy tennis and am proud to share it on my resume!
